Towards a Society that Embraces Neurodiversity
~ Exploring Factors Contributing to Long-term Employment of Neurodivergent Professionals in Human Services ~
In recent years, the concept of neurodiversity has gained traction, promoting the view of neurodevelopmental differences as natural variations in human cognition. However, workplace understanding and appropriate support for neurodivergent individuals remain insufficient. This is particularly true in human services professions, which are often perceived as challenging for those with neurodevelopmental differences due to the high demands on communication skills and adaptability.
This research aims to challenge such preconceptions. We focus on professionals diagnosed with neurodevelopmental differences who have successfully maintained long-term careers in human services. As a researcher who is both neurodivergent and a qualified psychologist, psychiatric social worker, and clinical developmental psychologist, I bring a unique perspective to this study, balancing insights from both the neurodivergent and neurotypical viewpoints.
Through qualitative research, we will explore factors contributing to sustained employment, including self-awareness and understanding of others, emotional regulation, appropriate boundary setting, and professional dedication. These findings are expected not only to broaden career options for neurodivergent individuals but also to contribute to workplace diversity and inclusion.
Our hypothesis suggests that successful long-term employment for neurodivergent professionals in human services may be attributed to:
1. Strong self-awareness and understanding of others
2. Effective emotional regulation
3. Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries in relationships
4. Professional commitment to client growth
Ultimately, this research aspires to contribute to the realization of a society where individual characteristics are respected and everyone can work authentically. We hope this study will be a step towards creating a more inclusive society that values neurodiversity in the workplace.
