Theory of Life Society
The term "life" is no longer a mere referent for biological phenomena. It is a concept that forms the core of the institutional arrangement of knowledge in the modern era, continuously transforming as it traverses the domains of governance, ethics, economics, and aesthetics. In contemporary society, the word "life" functions as a keyword that penetrates all fields. In areas such as reproductive medicine, genetic engineering, end-of-life care, the climate crisis, infectious disease management, and even AI, life has transformed from a natural fact into an object that is institutionally defined, politically managed, and ethically constructed.
In particular, this research group will focus on the following three pillars:
A re-examination of the philosophical genealogy of theories of life: To survey the development of theories of life in modern thought, as represented by figures such as Bergson, Canguilhem, Foucault, Deleuze, and Morin.
An examination of the specificity of the view of life in modern and contemporary Japanese thought: To analyze the transformation of the view of life in modern Japan and its institutional and cultural conditions, taking cues from the work of Hisayuki Omodaka and others.
A comprehensive and historical examination of interventions into life: To analyze the historical transitions in the practical definition and manipulation of life in fields such as medicine, education, welfare, and the judiciary.
